Community transport needs your help!

Community transport needs your help!

A call for volunteers has been made to help with community transport schemes within the District of Blaby.
Three organisations: Commbus, Braunstone Town Community Minibus and the Community Action Partnership Social Car Scheme currently serve the district, making over 18,000 passenger journeys during 2015-16.
Each scheme is a lifeline for many older, disabled or isolated residents in the district who otherwise would not usually get out and about. All three organisations rely on volunteers to keep the schemes going, with recruitment of drivers being one of the main challenges.
No previous experience is necessary to become a volunteer driver, with the organisations offering support. There are opportunities for volunteers to drive a minibus or use their own vehicle for the Social Car Scheme.
Organisations also require admin help, including fundraising and taking bookings as well as assisting residents on and off minibuses.
Sarah Pennelli, Director of People & Finance at Blaby District Council, said: "We know that community transport is a really important issue for our residents. With demand only likely to increase for these schemes in future years, we have spent time bringing together operators and partners to strengthen community transport in our district.
"We'd encourage anyone who is willing to volunteer to get involved. This cause makes a huge difference to the lives of residents who would be isolated without these services."
